Hydraulic Flow Meters: High-Pressure Diagnostics for Fluid Power Systems

Quick Answer: High-pressure hydraulic systems need flow meters that can handle 350 bar to 420 bar pressure peaks and thick hydraulic oil. Silver Instruments supplies oval gear and Coriolis flow meters for fluid power diagnostics on test benches, hydraulic power units, and mobile machinery. Send your pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size DN, and flow range for a specific quote.

Many engineers start with a standard flow meter and then find it leaking at 280 bar. That is a costly mistake on a hydraulic test bench. Fluid power systems have fast pressure pulses, high oil viscosity, and small line sizes. The flow meter must be selected as a high-pressure instrument, not as a general water meter.

We have seen this on customer sites many times. A hydraulic repair shop in Indonesia installed a plastic-body flow sensor on a pump outlet. The sensor lasted three days before the body cracked. After that the shop used a stainless steel oval gear meter from Silver Instruments. The meter held stable readings at 240 bar and the shop kept a record of pump health.

Pressure Rating Comes First

For industrial hydraulics, the pressure rating of the flow meter body and seals decides whether the device survives. Common hydraulic systems run at 210 bar, 250 bar, or 350 bar. Pressure spikes can go 20 to 30 percent higher. If your power unit is rated at 350 bar, specify a meter with a PN420 or higher rating.

Silver Instruments recommends oval gear meters with 316L stainless steel housings for most hydraulic oil flows from 0.2 L/min to 120 L/min. These meters accept DN10, DN15, DN25, and DN50 process connections. The standard pressure rating is 400 bar. For test benches with pressure peaks above 400 bar, we offer a high-pressure option with stainless steel flanges and special seal materials.

Fluid temperature also matters. Hydraulic oil often runs from 40 °C to 80 °C. Some mobile machines in Australia or the Middle East reach 90 °C under full load. The flow meter electronics should be separated or rated for ambient heat. The wetted parts must not soften at those temperatures. Silver Instruments calibrates each hydraulic flow meter at the expected working viscosity and temperature range.

Flow Meter Types for Fluid Power

Oval gear flow meters are a good first choice for hydraulic oil and lubrication oil. They have high repeatability on viscous liquids and they do not need straight run. A DN15 oval gear meter can measure 0.5 to 30 L/min with an accuracy of plus or minus 0.5 percent of reading. That fits many pilot lines and drain lines.

Coriolis mass flow meters are used when the diagnostic target includes mass flow, density, and temperature. A hydraulic laboratory in Singapore uses a Silver Instruments Coriolis meter to verify pump efficiency with ISO VG 32 oil. The meter reports kg/h, fluid temperature, and density in real time. It also detects air bubbles because density shifts when air is entrained in oil. That helps the lab find pump cavitation early.

For high flow loops above 200 L/min, we often put a vortex flow meter on the return line. Vortex meters have no moving parts and handle higher velocities. But make sure the line pressure and temperature match the sensor body. Use a DN50 or DN80 vortex meter with a pressure sensor downstream for diagnostic data.

Where High-Pressure Flow Meters Fail

The most common failure we see is seal extrusion. At high pressure, O-rings can extrude if the groove design is wrong. Silver Instruments uses pressure-balanced seal grooves on hydraulic oval gear meters. The meter body is designed for oil and water glycol fluids. For phosphate ester fluids, we change the seal material to FKM or EPDM depending on the fluid formulation.

Another failure is pressure drop. A small meter body in a high flow line can
