Why Nitrogen Measurement Matters in Food Plants

Food plants use nitrogen for packaging, blanketing, and purging. A snack food producer in Vietnam uses nitrogen to keep chips fresh inside bags. The gas raises shelf life and stops oil from oxidizing. The plant buys nitrogen in bulk and tracks usage per production line. Without a nitrogen flow meter, the plant cannot know if line 3 uses more gas than line 1.


In practice, most food plants measure nitrogen at the header pipe before the gas splits to packaging machines. A thermal mass flow meter with a DN25 or DN50 process connection fits this job well. Electronics Plants Need Accurate Low Flow Measurement

Electronics plants use nitrogen in reflow ovens, wave soldering, and storage cabinets. The flow rates are often low, from 0.5 to 20 SLM for small tools. Some nitrogen generators feed multiple reflow ovens. Each oven needs a local flow meter. A thermal mass flow meter with a 4-20 mA HART output connects to the plant controller.


A customer in Malaysia asked us for a compact nitrogen flow meter for a reflow oven. The pipe was stainless steel, DN10. The pressure was 2 bar. The flow range was 2 to 15 SLM. Most engineers skip the rotameter for nitrogen in electronics plants. Rotameters are sensitive to back pressure. They are hard to read from a distance. A thermal mass meter gives a digital output and a local totalizer. This helps maintenance teams track nitrogen usage per shift.


Recommended Meter Types for Nitrogen

Thermal mass flow meters are the most common choice for nitrogen gas. They measure mass flow directly. They handle low flow rates well. They have no moving parts. This means less maintenance in dirty gas or clean dry nitrogen lines.


Coriolis mass flow meters also measure nitrogen mass flow. They cost more. They are useful when you need very high accuracy, such as 0.2 percent of reading. A Coriolis meter works for high pressure nitrogen, up to 100 bar or more. But for standard plant nitrogen at 2 to 10 bar, a thermal mass flow meter usually gives the best payback.


Vortex flow meters can measure nitrogen flow by velocity. They need a minimum flow velocity to work. They also need temperature and pressure compensation to get mass flow. This adds cost and installation complexity. For nitrogen at low pressure or low flow, a vortex meter may not detect the flow. We do not recommend vortex for small nitrogen lines below DN25.
