The body contains a free-turning rotor mounted on a shaft. Fluid strikes the rotor blades. The rotor spins at a speed proportional to fluid velocity. A magnetic pickup or RF pickup detects each blade pass. The pickup sends pulses to a transmitter or PLC.


Here is the thing. The meter does not measure flow directly. It measures rotational speed. Flow rate then depends on the inside diameter and the K-factor. A small DN15 turbine may give thousands of pulses per litre. A DN200 turbine gives fewer pulses per cubic metre.


Most engineers skip this part during commissioning. They connect the pulse wire to a display unit and forget the K-factor. Then they blame the meter when the totalizer shows a 1.5% offset. The problem is usually a mismatch between the calibration sheet K-factor and the process fluid.


Rotor Blade Speed to Flow Rate Calculation
